Açai Saturday!

Yay for free days! Roberto took us to Casa de Cultura (House of Culture) which is a an old prison that has been turned into a shopping center. Each jail cell has a shop in it now. We shopped til we dropped! We always feel really important when we are with Roberto because he acts like our body guard. He is sneaky like a ninja, but never lets us out of his sight. He doesn't speak English, but I can tell he is really nice.

Today we saw a completely new side of Recife. The buildings were very colorful and the architecture was really interesting and older looking. This an example of one of the streets.

After we brought all of our exciting new purchases back to the house, we decided to walk down to the beach in Boa Viagem. It was the perfect time of day because the sun was just starting to set, so the temperature was great! We bought some big bowls of Açai and ate them on the beach.

Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!

Tonight was our American Football party. We decorated with University of Memphis colors, of course :) William tried to teach everyone to play football, but I am not sure that it was a big hit. Maybe we will just play soccer next time. Then, we popped Popcorn and watched Rudy. Because the lights were off, I didn't get many pictures of all the decorations. Ironically, Rudy has subtitles in English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Korean, andThai. Yes, Thai...but not Portuguese.

Juice Friday!

Tonight will be very busy because of the party, so I wanted to post a quick update for today.
I can't believe it's Friday again already! The sessions this week have been great, and seem to get better each time we meet with our readers.

This is what our reading sessions looks like...kind of. Mine usually include me, instead of Jarrod.

This is Christina!! I had not seen her since I moved out of her apartment because she went on a trip. It was a very exciting reunion!

It's JUICE FRIDAY!!!! Today we had Graviola Juice! Don't let the boys' faces fool you...they really do love it. They are just sick of being photographed every 5 minutes. One day they will appreciate these pictures ;)

Sport

Last night Sport (pronounced Spor-tee) beat Vasco in the semi-finals of the Brazilian Cup. It was a big deal. It was the first time in my life that I was actually able to hear 4 million people scream all at once! All of my readers were talking about it today.

Today was very busy for all of us. I got to read with Mario for the first time today. He was one of Missy's readers, that I was lucky enough to receive when she left. He is really sweet. In August, he is planning to go live with his brother in California for a year. His brother is already living in CA in a foreign exchange type program. He wants to play soccer because he will be REALLY good in America :) He and his mother, Christiani will be looking for a church home during their visit, so if anyone knows anyone from the Elk Grove area in California, please let me know.

Today, Luciano (who never fails to brighten my day) told me that I should run for President of the U.S! haha. He said that he would vote for me if he were American. I told him that I would consider it.

When we returned from lunch today, Danny was teaching Daniel and Gilmar how to say "Supercalifragilisticexpialodocious." They were extremely perplexed. Daniel was literally scratching his head. Speaking of lunch, here we are:

This is the place we have lunch each day. It is owned and run by Eneias and Adriana. We LOVE eating there, and look forward to lunch everyday! Look at all that food for the 3 of us! On Fridays we order juice. It's pretty much the best juice I have ever had. This is where we were introduced to Caja juice.

My plate...for those of you who have asked about the kind of food we eat. If I haven't said it before, spaghetti comes with everything here!

Açai

As each day gets a little busier than the day before, it becomes increasingly difficult to get to the computer to post updates and reply to emails. I'm sorry if takes me longer to respond now, than it did when we first arrived. I wanted to say a special "hello" to all the children, parents, and teachers at Harding Academy Early childhood. I miss you all SO much! Thank you for your emails. I have been trying to look at the photo gallery to keep up with what all my tiny "grown-ups" are doing :) I heard that the spring program was a hit, and I can't wait to see the DVD!

One thing that we, as a team, have all noticed is that we speak very slowly to each other when we come out of reading sessions-haha. We are so used to speaking very slowly, and using simple words and gestures that we do it to each other, and even type using simple words. It's funny to try to carry on a normal conversation with another English speaker at this point. We noticed that Randy, Kathy, and Danny were all having trouble remembering certain English words when we got here, and now we know why!

I feel like I should say more about my reading sessions, but I'm not sure what all would be interesting to hear. They are all very different from each other. Some people want to get in and out without speaking any more English than they have to. Others want to stay and talk all day long! It's really funny to see the difference. It's wonderful to watch people open up and build confidence in their conversation skills. It is becoming easier to communicate, and spend more meaningful time with each of them.

I knew I was forgetting a reader when I named all of them in a previous post. Julianna is the one who scratched her eye, and never came to a session. I have not heard from her, so please pray. Luciano brought me an Italian Bible to borrow! It was very exciting to be able to open it up and realize that I can read and understand more than I thought I would be able to. He and I were talking about the Prodigal Son in our session today. We got to talking about families and how important they are, and he mentioned that I must have a very special family. I had to agree with him!! As a matter of fact, here they are! I took this picture of the computer screen when I was talking with them on Skype! If you look very carefully, you can see me in the bottom left corner.

Today, some of the guys who work at the School of the Bible wanted to learn some slang English words. I taught them "ya'll" because it comes in so handy. Then they asked me how to say something is "really good" so I taught them how to say "That rocks!" and "That rocks my socks!" hahahaha. William told them not to ever say that to anyone. He is no fun.

Oh, and I also wanted to let all those Mona Vie fans know that Açai is everywhere here! And for really cheap! I ate a whole bowl of mushed up Açai with bananas and granola on top. It was pretty much the best thing I have ever tasted. I wish I had taken a picture of it to post on here, but I am sure I will get another chance. For those of you who don't know, Açai is a berry-like fruit found only in the Brazilian rainforest.

Tonight, we are going to the Wednesday night worship service and then "home" for dinner. Kathy's mother emailed me directions on how to make icecream using soy milk and bananas that I will have to try. Thanks again, Ms. Charlene! Then I'm sure we will play a few rounds of Pente before going to bed. It's hard to believe that we are already half way through our 3rd week here!! But I won't think about that right now. I'm just going to keep enjoying every moment!

Pente

Missy made it home safely!! Thank you for all of your prayers! Today was a very full day! All but one of my readers showed up, so I am exhausted...but in a good way! That is pretty much how it will be from now on, because almost all of my time slots have been filled. I got to meet the first time with 2 of Missy's readers today: Daniel and Tassia. I have been around Daniel everyday, though, because he works at the School of the Bible. He is a lot of fun, and really sweet. Well, Adriana was making fun of me because I spelled her husband's name wrong on my last post. It should have been Eneias. I think. She laughed about that a lot. Yesterday, Kathy went to the grocery store and came back with lots of surprises! She got me some soy milk and frozen veggie dinners! Now I have no reason to ever return to America-haha. I had looked for those things, but as you might remember, I don't know Portuguese. However, I have been given a crash course by some of the people who work at the School of the Bible, so it's possible that I will be fluent by the time I return. Doubtful, but possible. Kathy also showed us a new game called Pente. Basically, I am really good at it. I want everyone to know that I have beat Jarrod and William EVERYtime we have played. That's right. Every single time.

Goodbye Missy!

It's so hard to choose only a few pictures to post! If you ever want to know more about someone or thing, just post a comment and let me know! You can also email me anytime at klharris12@yahoo.com. Sometimes, I go back and add more pictures to older posts as well. Today we worshiped with the Boa Viagem church of Christ again, and then took Missy to the airport. It's so strange that it was already time for her to go. That means, one third of our time here is over :( She is flying now, so please pray for her safe return to the States tomorrow morning. This afternoon we got to move in with Randy and Kathy! It will be great for our team to be together, and much safer for all of us. Tomorrow we start our third week of reading sessions!
Our last team picture in front of a mural by Brennand. He is a famous Brazilian artist whose work is displayed all over Recife.
Can you find Jarrod?
Where's William?
We had fun waiting at the airport :)
Bye Missy! Hope you make it home safely!
